The ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) is close to finalising the bidders to supply 3600 electric buses under the PM e-bus Sewa Scheme. “We are doing the final evaluation, and the decision will be taken in a day or two. The idea is to give the contract before the model code of conduct kicks in,” said a source at MoHUA.
The estimated value of this electric bus tender is 7000-7500 crore. The average price range of electric buses is about 2 crore. The big players for electric buses are TATA motors, Ashok Leyland and Olectra Greentech and JBM Group.
Last November, state owned Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) invited 3,600 electric buses to bid. The tender entailed operation, maintenance, and development of allied electric and civil infrastructure for these buses. The government is thinking of selling their tender at an attractive price range due to bulk production. “The tender was combined but the entities have submitted their bids state-wise,” said the source.
In 2023, PM Modi launched the PM e-bus Sewa Scheme at Rs 57,000 crore to provide 10,000 electric buses for 169 cities within 5 years. The central government will provide 20,000 and the remaining money will be provided by the state government. This scheme will generate 45,000 to 55,000 director jobs under the scheme.
